Cutting Edge – the art of turned
wood
Woodturning Symposium
Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 April, 2011
Join us at Pataka for a weekend celebrating the world of wood and
woodturning. Engage with the artists featured in our two exhibitions
Cutting Edge – The Art of Turned Wood and Turning Plus as they
present a series of workshops, demonstrations, artist floor talks,
displays and exhibition tours.

Alby Hall
A
leading figure in NZ woodturning, Alby Hall has
developed new
processes and tools to achieve new designs. He has a Bachelor in
Fine Arts. Alby's work has an emphasis on nature
and
conservation. He has
exhibited widely in NZ and has pieces in collections overseas.
Alby will
be demonstrating and speaking about his work and his process of taking
an image
from nature and creating a large turned piece.
Robbie Graham
Robbie
Graham describes himself as an ‘artist woodturner’.
With many years of
production work Robbie has opened the ‘Wildwood’ gallery in
Waitahanui and has
developed a distinctive style of woodturned art pieces that have been
enhanced
with acrylic paint, inks, pyrography, texturing and carving. Nature is
definitely an inspiration for Robbie Graham’s work.
Bryan Hawkins
Bryan
Hawkins produces a range of items from miniature pieces through to
larger items
and he has developed an interest in embellishment. His decoration
techniques include texturing wood, gilding and the application of
acrylic paint
and inks. Bryan uses native tim b ers
and they are often recycled from their original uses.
Graeme McIntyre
Local
artist Graeme McIntyre has a background in mechanical engineering
design and a
love of the outdoors. Graeme specialises in thin wall turning to
enable
the piece to be pierced and sees woodturning as a way of releasing
hidden
beauty in the wood.
Hugh Mill
Hugh
Mill has been woodturning for over 25 years and has also been a
woodturing tutor
since the mid
1990’s. Hugh creates his pieces from native NZ timbers and
attempts to
reflect in them his Māori heritage and place in the Pacific.
Phil Quinn
Phil
Quinn started in furniture and cabinet making, and began turning bowls,
platters and vases. He has now developed and widened his skills
into
embellishment inspired by nature, flowers, leaves and colour.
His techniques include
paint application, dyes, stains, pyrography (pokerwork), texturing and
recently
free-form shaping and carving.
John Spittal
John
Spittal has been working with wood for over 30 years. John makes
beautiful hand tools from wood, steel, bone and other materials.
All of
the tools John makes are designed for fine woodworking. John has
a
special interest in Medieval and traditional Asian and Canadian First
Nation
craft. John’s designs also often incorporate Japanese
Netsuke-like
figures.
Jim Lowe
Jim
Lowe currently runs the National School of Woodturning in Paraparaumu
where he
teaches at both beginner and master levels. Jim Lowe’s
woodturning skills
extend into carving, resins and sandblasting Inspired by nature and his
location on the Kapiti coast. His contemporary pieces use bright
colours and
sparkling resins.
Denis Newton
Although Trained as a fitter and turner I have always had a leaning
towards woodturning. I bought a new lathe in 1988, had a one day
lesson and became hooked.
