Policy 1:  Assistance to Guild Members and their beneficiaries disposing of tools and machinery and wood.

Policy

The Guild provides assistance to Members and, in the event of their death, their immediate beneficiaries wishing to dispose of tools, machinery and wood. In the first instance the Guild will provide an advisory and valuation service to set a fair sale price for the items.

  • If required, it will arrange for the disposal of the items by the best means possible.  This can be by activities such as a sale at the person’s premises that is open to the public, sale tables at Guild events and Internet auctions.

  • The Guild will provide one or two people who are conversant with market values and conditions to advise and value.

  • No valuations will be given if the tools or machinery are considered to be unsafe.

It is the Member or beneficiary’s responsibility to seek the Guild’s assistance and either accept or reject the advice given.

While the Guild will use best endeavours it does not guarantee that the items will be sold or that the valuations given will be realised.

Principles

The Guild Advisors/Valuers will conform to the following principles:

  • The family of the member should have first priority for any items they want, either before or after valuation.
  • The Guild will try to reconcile expectations of value and saleability with the condition of the items and the current market.  Where this is not possible, the views of the Member/beneficiaries will prevail.
  • The sale of unsafe items will be dissuaded.
  • Best endeavours will be used to also assist people from outside the Guild who require valuations.  Available on request from the Secretary.  There is a fee of $40.

Timing

The best valuations are usually obtained while the items are in good condition.  Lack of use and rust can cause them to deteriorate over time.  The decision on when to dispose is entirely up to the Member or beneficiaries.  They need to determine when the time is right for them.

Ideally members will make arrangements for the disposal of their tools, machinery and wood well in advance of when it is required.  As a minimum they should make a list of items and provide some guidance on the purchase cost.
